Begin by mixing together the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in a large bowl. Next drop in the shortening. Pour in the first quantity of milk and vanilla. The first quantity being the ¾ cup milk and the 1 ½ teaspoon vanilla. Mix at a medium speed with an electric mixer, or with a fork until well blended. Last add the remainder of the milk and eggs, and stir until all the lumps have disappeared. This usually takes three to four minutes.
